gURL's and Women

I was greatly intrigued to find out that there have been websites for women that were created long before the World Wide Web was formed in the was it is now. These websites were probably get ways for women to get together and talk about their similar interests.  It gave them a new way to communicate with other women.

I found it quite interesting to both of the websites were sold to other companies after they both tried to make money as IPO's.  It reminded of me how facebook tried to make more money by becoming an IPO and with in the first day of trading, it lost value.  Also, if I remember correctly, gURL.com ended up turning in to a mainstream website that was linked with the magazine Seventeen.  This is quite a change from what it was originally founded to be.  I know Seventeen is a magazine aimed at girls but I do not know what exactly is in it.  I am assuming its one that talks about what to wear and what guys think, stuff to that nature.  This connection is quite opposite of what the website was originally founded for.  To see that over time websites that were founded by feminist were now sponsored by what they stood against

  1. Once big time advertising became involved the original sites changed their outlook and future goals. It became about money and not about any important message of any kind.

  2. The move to popularity often really changes a tech space, right? I think about how cool MySpace was "back in the day" and how awful and cookie-cutter it is now.
