It makes sense to me that you really focused in on toys, on products, for defining girlhood visually. I really like the red, white and blue bow image you included. I know it probably was trending because it's close to the Fourth, but it's also a cool conflation of America and patriotism and a very specific kind of blonde, blue-eyed girlhood.
Every single one of those was something either one of my sisters had at one point in their childhood. Even my mother showed me pictures of her childhood and I remembering seeing a tea party picture with her and all of her teddy bears and dolls. It was extremely different than the footballs, baseballs, basketballs, ect. that I grew up with as my toys.
Nice board! I remember my sister wanted a horse as well. I don't recall ever wanting a horse ever. Nor do I recall the boys around me wanting one. The jealousy around one teenaged female family friend who DID get a horse was unmatched. But, I'm here to tell you horses are lots of work. They need exercise and multiple daily feeds. Goldfish, they ain't.
